September 2013 Glam Bag

The September Ipsy Glam Bag aimed to celebrate 'the classic beauties, from Mona Lisa to Monroe, who have made us swoon from generation to generation.'  This month's "Classic Beauty" bag was filled with products to achieve a classic beauty look, with quite a heavy focus on the eyes and lips.

This month my Glam Bag included five eye products and one lip product:

Cailyn Cosmetics - Tinted Lip Balm in Big Apple ($19.00/5 g)
This ultra-matte, super-moisturizing lip balm delivers rich color and amazing staying powder.  This amazing lip balm is formulated with 3D Smart Film Former, which keeps color vibrant longer.  Includes a built-in brush for easy application.

Sample size: 3 g
Sample value: $11.40

When I first tried out this Tinted Lip Balm (before reading about it on the Ipsy website), I was a little shocked, to say the least.  When I think tinted lip balm, I usually assume a product will be very moisturizing with a sheer tint of color.  That is certainly not what you'll get with these Cailyn Cosmetics balms.  These are HIGHLY pigmented matte lip colors, more along the lines of a long wearing lipstick than a traditional balm.  The product sets on the lips, creating a long-lasting finish while still keeping the lips comfortable.  I wouldn't say this Tinted Lip Balm is as hydrating as I typically expect from a balm, but it's not drying either.  The built-in brush makes this product extremely handy for use at your vanity or on the go.

NYX - Single Eye Shadow in Morocco ($4.50/2.4 g)
The NYX Single Eye Shadow packs a punch of color and is incredibly easy to blend.  Go edgy or understated effortlessly, and enjoy the luscious, long-wearing color from sunrise to sunset... and beyond!

Sample size: 2.4 g
Sample value: $4.50

I'm a big fan of NYX cosmetics.  Every product I've tried from the brand has been wonderful and their price point is incredible.  This eye shadow is smooth and pigmented; the color, however, is not one I would typically gravitate toward.  Morocco is a silvery navy-purple.  I couldn't find this shade on the NYX website, so I'm wondering if it has been discontinued.  Overall, not over the moon about this one.  The product itself is great, but I'll probably pass it along to a friend who would appreciate the color more (I'm just a neutral eye shadow girl at heart).

Starlooks - Kohl Eye Pencil in Obsidian ($12.00/2.4 g)
The Starlooks Obsidian Kohl Eye Pencil glides across delicate lids without pulling.  Try using this creamy liner to create a smoky eye or use it as a base for eyeshadows on your entire lid.

Sample size: 2.4 g
Sample value: $12.00

Victoria Jackson - Taupe Brow Pencil ($14.95/0.23 g)
A necessity in your makeup kit, the Victoria Jackson Brow Pencil is the perfect blend of colors that matches all skin tones and complements all hair colors.  This brow pencil also contains a built in sharpener that sharpens the pencil to a fine point.

Sample size: 0.23 g
Sample value: $14.95

The Starlooks Obsidian Kohl Eye Pencil is a nice, mid-range black eye pencil.  It's soft, but not too creamy.  It's also a more soft black.  I wouldn't recommend it if you're going for a really deep, dark definition; however, it would be lovely for subtle, everyday lining of the eyes.

The Victoria Jackson Taupe Brow Pencil seems to be a truly universal shade.  I could see it working on a lot of skin tones and hair colors.  The pencil itself is mechanical but includes a built-in sharpener to keep the point nice and sharp for precise strokes.

Elizabeth Mott - It's So Big Volumizing Mascara ($19.99/10 ml)
An Ipsy exclusive launch!  This mascara was created using a unique formula that delivers BIG volume and lengthens and curls your lashes without smudging!  The hourglass brush ensures that you get the right amount of mascara applied to each lash.

Sample size: 4 ml
Sample value: $8.00

I'm a mascara junkie and look forward to trying this new launch.  I'm pretty well endowed in the lashes department, so I'm not usually overly picky about mascara as most work well on my lashes.  I haven't tried this one out yet, but I'm optimistic.  I really love hourglass-shaped brushes and the promises of the formula excite me.

Total bag value: $50.85

Overall, I liked the assortment of products sent out this month.  I feel like the type of products fit the "Classic Beauty" theme fairly well, though I would have appreciated a more neutral, classic eye shadow shade.  This month I think I'm most excited to use the Cailyn Tinted Lip Balm and the Elizabeth Mott It's So Big Volumizing Mascara.  I'm definitely a lips and lashes kind of gal.

  1. I'm jealous of the lip balm and the brow pencil you got. I would have loved to have gotten those in mine.
